If you don’t notice the lighting, and it doesn’t draw your attention to it, you know you’ve done a good job.
Throughout the Pandemic, broadcasters, correspondents and reporters have been working from home or remote studios and were not properly lit while on air. The bad lighting was very noticeable and distracting from the information the broadcaster was delivering. There was an immediate need for a solution that would help broadcasters, government, social media influencers, or corporate meetings look their best.
Working with Chroma-Q we developed a professional light that would assist people to look their best while appearing on camera.
Three Problems in Broadcast & Social Media
Camera angle
When setting up a camera for a video broadcast, the camera should be at eye level. With this setup, the subject will be in the frame for the most flattering appearance, looking their best. Many people, using their laptop cameras, shoot from below chin level, up their nostrils and up towards the ceiling. The result is an unflattering look of the subject but a good look at their ceiling.
Distance from Camera
The subject should be approximately 28-30” from the camera. This distance allows for the subject to be the main focus of the frame, not the ceiling, background, etc. The audience will be able to focus on the subject and message instead of being distracted by the background.
Lighting
There are many things to consider when lighting a person for video or conferencing:
Are there windows in the camera frame or near enough to effect the shot?
What is the lighting in the room, overhead?
What harsh shadows are being created?
Can you see the subject clearly?

The fixture can be colour corrected to balance out the lighting from a window to one side of the subject, or behind the subject. It can correct the lighting in the room, shadows so that you can see the subject clearly. Sandi is easy to use, non-blinding, the colour temperature is adjustable for all skin tones and lighting situations. Best of all, it’s portable, can be packed up into a road case and taken where ever you need to go. Set up is quick, and the settings can even remember your last setup.
The fixture can even be used off-set to prepare the subject for the camera. The variable colour temperature, allows make-up artists to work in the exact lighting that will be used for remote outdoor and studio location lighting.
When people don’t look good on camera, you are distracted and forget what they are talking about. You are absorbed by the bad lighting, camera angle, etc.
